EYE EMERGENCIES
Under an agreement with Ophthalmology in Aberdeen and Elgin, Optometrists in the Grampian area have formed an Eyehealth Network. This allows us direct access by phone and email to Ophthalmology for referral and advice.
If you have an eye emergency your local optometrist should be your first port of call. We will arrange to see you at a mutually convenient time and assess your eye health.
We can manage and treat many conditions within the practice or if necessary arrange urgent referral to the hospital eye clinic.
When you call please be prepared to give details of your problem to the optical assistant who will if necessary, pass them on to the optometrist who will decide on urgency of the condition and when the appointment should be.
In practice the optometrist can remove metal fragments and other foreign bodies, help in the management of dry eye conditions, blepharitis, eyelid cysts and allergic, viral or bacterial conjunctivitis.
The sudden appearance of floaters and/ or flashes requires urgent assessment. The optometrist will need to instill drops to dilate the pupil (make pupil bigger) in order that the eyes can be examined thoroughly. If necessary a review appointment will be booked or referral to the eye clinic as appropriate.
If you have a flare up of a pre-existing condition we will assess the condition, prescribe medication with help of your general practitioner (doctor), and refer to the appropriate clinic within Eye department.
If in any doubt about your eyes please contact us for advice at the earliest opportunity.
